United States Army Medals And Decorations of the Vietnam Era

Joint Service Commendation Medal

Established by order of the Secretary of Defense on 17 May 1967. Awarded for "Meritorious achievement or service while assigned to a joint activity." Bronze "V" device worn to denote Valor/ Heroism in Combat.

Subsequent awards same as DSC.


ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL

Established by the Secretary of War as a ribbon in 1945, a Medal was added in 1949. Awarded for "Heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service." Bronze "V" device worn to denote Valor/Heroism in Combat.

Subsequent awards same as DSC.


PRISONER OF WAR MEDAL

" Authorized for all United States personnel who were taken prisoner of war after 5 April 1917 during an armed conflict and who served honorably during the period of captivity."

Subsequent awards same as DSC.


NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL

Awarded for honorable active service of any length, during a National Emergency from:

1. 27 June 1950-27 July 1954

2. 01 Jan. 1961-14 Aug. 1974

3. 02 Aug. 1990-30 Nov. 1995

Subsequent awards are designated by Bronze Service Stars.


ARMED FORCES EXPEDITIONARY MEDAL

Established by order of the President on 14 Dec. 1961 for service in military operations for which no other campaign medal has been authorized.

Vietnam, 01 July 1958 to 03 July 1965

Note: Awarded for other times and locations not listed here.

Subsequent awards same as DSC.


VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL

Established by the order of the President on 01 Oct. 1965, for Service in Vietnam, and contiguous waters or airspace after 03 July 1965 and through 28 March 1973. service in direct support of Vietnam from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia is also eligible.

One Bronze Service Star may be worn for each campaign; One Sliver Service Star in lieu of five Bronze Service Stars



ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL

Established by Executive Order 28 June 1941. Awarded to Enlisted personnel, who have honorably completed three years of active duty, or who have honorably served one year of military service while the United States is at war.

UNITED STATES ARMY UNIT AWARDS

PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION
Awarded to Units of the UNITED STATES and Cobelligerent Nations for Extraordinary Heroism in Action Against an Armed Enemy occurring on or after 7 Dec. 1941. The Unit must display such Gallantry, Determination, and Esprit De Corps in accomplishing its Mission under Extremely Difficult and Hazardous Conditions as to set it apart from and above other Units participating in the same Campaign.

The Degree of Heroism is the same, which would warrant an Award of a Distinguished Service Cross to an Individual. Extended periods of Combat Duty or participation in a large number of Operational Missions is not sufficient. Only on rare occasions is the award presented to units larger than battalions. Succeeding awards are denoted by Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.


VALOROUS UNIT AWARD
Awarded by the Army to units of the United States Army for extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy in actions on or after 3 Aug. 1963. The degree of heroism is the same, which would warrant an award of a Sliver Star to an individual. Succeeding awards are denoted by Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.

JOINT MERITORIOUS UNIT AWARD
Awarded in the name of the Secretary of Defense to Joint Activities of the DOD for meritorious achievement or service. Superior to that normally expected, during combat with an armed enemy.

MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION (CITATION)
Awarded to a unit for at least six months of outstanding service during a period of combat on, or, after 1 Jan. 1944. The Degree of achievement is that which would merit the award of the Legion of Merit to an individual.

Succeeding Awards are denoted by Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.


COMBAT MEDICAL BADGE
The Combat Medical Badge was conceived 1 March 1945 by order of the War Department. The CMB was to recognize Medical men who shared the same hardships as combat troops on a daily basis. This Award is intended for those medical men who, engaged the enemy and served under direct fire. In Vietnam, Requirements were so stringent that recommending officers were required to document the time, place and the intensity of fire to which the medical personnel were exposed.

The preceding United States and Army decorations are some of the decorations awarded to our unit, and our brothers for their Vietnam service. You may have been awarded a decoration that is not listed here. You may also be entitled to an Army Overseas Ribbon Bar and Army Service Ribbon.
